Hot Runner Systems (HRS) for Plastic Injection Molding
Hot runner systems (HRS) are an integral part of modern plastic injection molding production. These systems deliver molten plastic directly into the mold’s forming cavities. The use of HRS optimizes the production process, reduces material waste (no cold runners), and improves the quality of finished parts. HRS is especially important for producing thin-walled parts and large numbers of parts in a single mold (e.g., 48 cavities). Key components of HRS include manifolds and nozzles, which require precise temperature control.
Industrial Heating Elements and Their Types
To maintain the required temperature conditions in industrial equipment, including hot runner systems for molds, a variety of heating elements (heaters or industrial heating cartridges) are used. KVOTA offers a wide selection of European-manufactured heaters:
- Cartridge heaters: High-power cylindrical heating elements used for direct contact heating of metal components, including mold plates and manifolds. Explosion-proof versions with built-in protection are also available.
- Coil heaters: Compact heaters frequently used for heating nozzles in hot runner systems. They provide uniform heat distribution around cylindrical surfaces. Flexible versions are available and can be custom-made based on the customer's drawings and required heating zones.
- Ceramic heaters: Ceramic heating elements (including sectional GC-change types) offer high operating temperatures and excellent insulation properties. They provide efficient heating and long service life.
- Other heater types: The product range also includes GC-flex flexible heaters, high-density flange heaters (GC-flange), flow-through heaters (GC-flow), and screw-type heaters (GC-screw), suitable for specific heating applications.
Materials and Operating Principle of Heating Elements
Industrial heating elements are made from materials with high electrical resistance (typically special alloys). As electric current passes through the heating element, Joule–Lenz law dictates that electrical energy is converted into heat, enabling the heating process. The construction and material of each heater are selected based on the required power, operating temperature, and environmental conditions.
The Importance of Precise Control: Temperature Regulators
Efficient operation of both hot runner systems and individual heating devices is impossible without precise temperature regulation. Temperature controllers are used to maintain target temperatures by receiving data from thermocouples or other sensors and regulating power to the heating element. This ensures process stability and prevents overheating or insufficient heating.
